GREENE, FLOOD, RATLIFF WIN SEASON-OPENING BIKE RACE
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Barry Greene took up where he left off at Rockingham Dragway, riding a modified  Suzuki to victory in the featured Schnitz Racing Outlaw Pro Street class at the Spencercycle.com/MaxV Spring Open.

A field of more than 300 bikes from 12 states filled the pits at The Rock for the first race in the 2004 MIRock Motorcycle Series maintained jointly by Rockingham Dragway and Maryland International Raceway.

Greene was the No. 1 qualifier, set a national record by pushing his bike to a best quarter mile time of 7.164 seconds and added the Spring Open championship the Lee's Performance Fall Bike Nationals title he claimed at Rockingham last November.

The only thing that eluded the Hinesville, Ga., driver was top speed of the meet which went to runner-up Tony Girardi of Hollywood, Fla.  Girardi  pushed his Suzuki through the quarter mile timers at a record 196.04 miles per hour in qualifying second.

Other winners in the event, the first of eight races in the MIRock Series, included John Flood of Oakland, N.Y., Shane Ratliff of Roseville, Mich., and Tim Hill of Asheboro, N.C.

Flood upset No. 1 qualifier and defending series champion Mike Slowe of Bensalem, Pa., in the final round of the Orient Express 60-Inch Sport Bike class after Slowe set a national record for the class with a time of 8.054 seconds in the semifinals.

Ratliff prevailed in the Heavyweights class – for riders weighing at least 240 pounds – by beating defending series champion John Vermeulen of Clarkston, Mich., in round two and No. 1 qualifier Ehren Little of Lewisville, N.C., in a final round in which he applied an exclamation point by posting the quickest time in history at 8.227 seconds.

Like Ratliff, Hill beat the No. 1 qualifier in the final round to win the Honda-Suzuki of Sanford 5.60 Heads-Up title.  In a class in which riders try to run as close to the 5.60 second target as possible (without dipping beneath it), Hill used a 5.646 second, 118.05 mph effort to get past Chris Clontz of Mechanicsville, Md., in the final.  Clontz, who had qualified closest to the target at 5.606, slowed to 5.702 at 122.39 mph in the money round.

Dale Hamilton and Robert Benge Jr., both of Mt. Airy, Md., were the weekend winners in the Nitrous Express Pro ET bracket while Darby Green of Lexington, N.C., and Edward Johnson of Falls City, Va., claimed the Fish's Customs Street ET titles.  Matt McAdams of Edgewater, Md., won the FBR Shop Quick 8 championship. Hamilton won the $500 bonus from Nitrous Express for winning the most rounds of racing over the two days in the Pro ET class.

The remaining MIRock events at Rockingham Dragway include the Schnitz Summer Sizzler, July 22-24; the A&J Performance Autumn Bike Nationals, Sept. 11-12; and the Lee's Fall Bike Nationals, Nov. 13-14.  Four other series events will be contested at MIR with points accumulated at both tracks determining the series champions in Outlaw Pro Street, 60-Inch Sport Bike and Heavyweights.
